Surge in Online Transactions, Consumer Protection Becomes Priority

Jakarta — The development of the digital economy, supported by increased internet penetration, has driven the use of digital trading platforms as a transaction medium. For business operators, the intensifying digital transaction activity not only opens wider market opportunities but also demands continuous adaptation capabilities to consumer dynamics and expectations.

Amid the accelerating and increasingly massive digital commerce, discrepancies between product claims and the quality consumers receive have the potential to violate consumer protection principles. If left unchecked, this phenomenon could weaken public confidence in the digital trading ecosystem.

Recognising this urgency, the Directorate General of Consumer Protection and Fair Trade (PKTN) under the Ministry of Trade is working to strengthen quality standards in digital commerce. By partnering with Lazada Indonesia and Lampu.id and involving more than 250 business operators, they conducted training on “Quality and Trust: Keys to Building Consumer Loyalty and Best-Selling Products in the Market”.

Business operators were educated that quality is the primary foundation of success. Sales growth, after all, will not be sustainable without consumer trust built consistently.

“The Ministry of Trade is here to ensure that the business climate grows healthily, fairly, and sustainably. Consumer protection is not meant to complicate business operations, but rather to build a trustworthy market where honesty, compliance, and innovation go hand in hand,” said Moga Simatupang, Directorate General of PKTN at the Ministry of Trade, in a press statement in Jakarta on Saturday, 14 March 2026.

According to him, strengthened regulation and synergy with marketplaces are concrete manifestations of state presence in protecting Indonesian consumers. “For this reason, the effectiveness of regulation can only be achieved through close collaboration with business operators, in order to realise an orderly and equitable business ecosystem, as well as empowered consumers,” Moga added.
