Surakarta Community Through PMI Builds 3 Borewells for Aceh Tamiang
This step was taken to restore access to clean water, which has been the main challenge for residents after the disaster.
Banda Aceh (ANTARA) - The Surakarta community through the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Surakarta City chapter has provided assistance for the construction of three borewell points for residents affected by flash floods in Aceh Tamiang Regency as a form of solidarity.
“This step was taken to restore access to clean water, which has been the main challenge for residents after the disaster,” said Surakarta City PMI Chairman Sumartono Hadinoto in a statement in Banda Aceh on Sunday.
The borewells target three strategic locations with depths of 40 to 80 meters to ensure hygienic water quality. Currently, one point in Menang Gini Village, Karang Baru Subdistrict, has been completed 100 percent and its benefits are already being felt by 27 households there.
“Meanwhile, the other two points in Sekerak Kiri Village (29 households) and At-Taqwa Mosque in Kota Lintang (500 congregants) are currently in the drilling process,” he said.
Sumartono stated that the borewell assistance for disaster-affected residents in Aceh is a collective mandate from the people of Solo. He said humanity knows no territorial boundaries.
“We hope these borewells will not only serve as a short-term post-flood solution but will become permanent infrastructure ensuring that Aceh Tamiang residents have sustainable access to safe drinking water,” Sumartono said.
Meanwhile, Aceh Tamiang PMI Chairman Irwan Pane expressed deep appreciation and gratitude for the collaboration in assisting disaster-affected residents.
“We are very grateful for the concern shown by the Surakarta community. This support is very meaningful for accelerating the physical and psychological recovery of our residents,” he said.
“This cooperation proves that the PMI network is very solid in responding to community needs, even in the most difficult locations,” Irwan Pane said.
On the occasion, Badrul, one of the beneficiaries from Menang Gini Village, said he has been greatly helped by the borewell, as they previously had extreme difficulty obtaining clean water.
“Because many of the residents’ wells were contaminated by leftover flood mud. With this deep borewell, the water is clear. We are very grateful and thankful to the people of Solo and PMI,” Badrul said.
