Surabaya's "Dandan Kampung" Programme Transforms the Face of Residents' Settlements
The “Dandan Kampung” programme does not merely beautify areas but also encourages active resident participation to create more livable, empowered, and characterful environments.
Surabaya (ANTARA) - Chairman of Commission C of the Surabaya City Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD), Eri Irawan, is overseeing the implementation of the “Dandan Kampung” programme run by the Surabaya City Government as a strategy for organising residential areas based on community participation.
“The ‘Dandan Kampung’ programme does not only beautify areas but also encourages active resident participation to create a more livable, empowered, and characterful environment,” said Eri Irawan in Surabaya on Thursday.
He explained that the programme is carried out through collaboration between the Surabaya Department of Housing, Human Settlements, and Land Affairs (DPRKPP), universities, non-governmental organisations, and resident communities.
Several villages that are programme locations include Kampung Dinoyo, Kampung Keputran, Kampung Lawas Maspati, Kampung Semanggi, Kampung Pecinan, and Kampung Ketandan.
Eri stated that the involvement of various parties, including cross-disciplinary students, is one of the strengths in developing neighbourhood organisation concepts. In addition, residents are involved through environmental-level discussion forums.
“I see good collaboration between students, government, and the community in designing area organisation,” he said.
Furthermore, neighbourhood organisation also impacts the increase in residents’ asset values and opens opportunities for developing household-based businesses, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
According to Eri, the “Dandan Kampung” programme reflects a community-based development approach that can serve as a best practice in sustainable city planning.
“This programme shows a shift in perspective towards people’s settlements to become more inclusive and sustainable,” he said.
