Jakarta — Following an extended feasibility study and review process, the Surabaya Regional Railway Line (SRRL) project has officially commenced. This development was marked by a kickoff meeting for the Railway Design Consultant (RDC) SRRL Phase I, conducted by the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation in collaboration with the German Development Bank (KfW) and Chodai Co. Ltd as design consultants.

The SRRL development project is scheduled to commence in 2027, with construction beginning in 2028. The initiative, valued at US$250 million (approximately IDR 4.1 trillion), will serve as the backbone of connectivity for the Gerbangkertosusila region whilst promoting a shift in mobility patterns from private vehicles to more energy-efficient electric rail transport.

For the route, SRRL Phase 1 Section IA will connect Surabaya Gubeng Station with Sidoarjo Station across 27 kilometres. Section IB will link Gubeng Station with Pasar Turi. Both sections IA and IB will be constructed as Electric Train Lines (KRL).

The Sidotopo depot is also being prepared to serve as the depot for the KRL within the SRRL project. The SRRL is expected to alleviate congestion in Surabaya City and Sidoarjo Regency during peak morning and evening hours.

East Java Deputy Governor Emil Dardak expressed strong appreciation for the initiative. According to him, the SRRL represents a highly complex undertaking, as it will be executed without disrupting existing railway operations.

“This is no longer just a proposal. Everything will be designed in detail, including the electrical systems, how it crosses bridges, and this will form the basis for tendering the construction phase,” he stated.

Additionally, Emil noted that funding of 230 million euros has been secured and is ready for implementation.

“Naturally, this requires special attention as the SRRL will be executed concurrently with the dual-track railway line along Wonokromo, which will also be constructed by the DJKA,” Emil added.
