Surabaya to host free peace concert

JAKARTA (JP): International peace advocate Sri Chinmoy will stage a free peace concert at the Sheraton Surabaya Hotel on Sunday at 7 p.m.

The 67-year-old musician, artist, poet, athlete and spiritual leader will perform his own compositions which comprise a mixture of Western and Eastern instruments like flute, cello and harmonium.

Chinmoy has composed thousands of songs about the need for love and peace. This concert, part of his eight-week tour of Southeast Asia, is one of his various activities to promote peace, love, admiration and respect for all religions around the world.

The India-born Chinmoy has been honored with several awards for his creative work for peace over 30 years. On his fourth visit to Indonesia, he has brought 200 international students from 24 countries and of several faiths, who want to learn from the Indonesian ethics of harmony, modesty, calmness and unique moral heritage.

His peace tours, the first of which was in 1984, have led him to Paris, New York, Canberra and Tokyo, among other cities.
