The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Maritime Station in Tanjung Perak, Surabaya issued an early warning of tidal flooding expected to affect East Java’s coastal areas from Surabaya to Banyuwangi between 31 May and 3 June 2026.

Sutarno, Coordinator of Observation and Information at BMKG Maritime Station Tanjung Perak Surabaya, said the impact of the tidal flooding is expected to be widespread, covering the Surabaya-Madura coastal areas to the eastern tip of Java.

The natural phenomenon is triggered by the full moon phase on 31 May, which is expected to cause a sharp rise in maximum sea levels along the coastline.

‘For Surabaya, the affected areas are predicted to include West Surabaya, Benowo, Surabaya Port, North Surabaya, East Surabaya, and Kenjeran,’ Sutarno said on Friday (29 May).

BMKG detected tidal flooding risks in South Bangkalan and Kresek area in West Sampang, as well as in Gresik, Lamongan, Tuban, Sidoarjo, Pasuruan, Probolinggo, Jember, and Banyuwangi.

‘Similar conditions are forecast for the coastal waters of Gresik, Lamongan, Tuban, Sidoarjo, Pasuruan, Probolinggo, Jember, and Banyuwangi,’ he said.

BMKG warned that this tidal flooding could disrupt maritime activities, including delays in port logistics operations and disruption to fishing activities in community fishponds.

Sutarno warned that the situation could worsen significantly if the maximum high tide coincides with heavy rainfall in the affected areas.

Sutarno also urged residents to avoid direct contact with floodwaters due to the corrosive nature of seawater, which can damage vehicles and structures. He advised coastal communities to remain calm but extra vigilant.

‘Residents are urged to monitor BMKG updates before conducting activities in East Java’s coastal areas,’ he added.
