Surabaya Fatal Hit-and-Run Suspect Admits Consuming Alcohol
The suspect in a fatal hit-and-run case near the Grahadi State Building in Surabaya, identified as ENR (32), has admitted to consuming alcohol before driving and causing the accident on Sunday (23/8).
Speaking before investigators and journalists, ENR said she had just returned from a party at an entertainment venue when the incident occurred. At the party, she drank a large amount of alcohol.
“From the party venue. From around that area. [I drank] seven glasses of alcohol, a quarter each,” ENR said at the Surabaya Police Traffic Unit office on Monday (24/8).
ENR also admitted that she went to and returned from the party alone, without any companions. She insisted on driving her private car because she was unaware that she was intoxicated.
“I went alone, drove home alone. I myself was not aware that I was drunk. As a drunk person, I was not conscious,” ENR said.
ENR’s car struck a parked electric taxi on Jalan Taman Apsari. She immediately panicked and feared the reaction of residents at the scene.
ENR then fled towards Jalan Gubernur Suryo, which led to a second fatal accident. She hit a person, who died at the scene.
“It was because I was afraid after grazing the taxi and being chased by a mob. I was afraid of being attacked by the mob. I tried to flee, but instead an accident occurred that killed someone,” the woman said.
ENR also addressed a viral video showing her appearing emotional and resisting when detained by residents. She again claimed she was not fully conscious due to the influence of alcohol.
On that occasion, ENR apologised to the victim’s family and expressed regret for her actions.
“To the victim’s family, as the suspect in the collision, I sincerely apologise,” she said.
“I was not conscious, I did not know. If I had known, if I had been aware there was a person, it would not have happened. I sincerely apologise to the victim’s family who have been left behind,” ENR added.
The Surabaya Police have officially named ENR as a suspect in the fatal hit-and-run case near the Grahadi State Building on Sunday.
Head of the Traffic Accident Unit at Surabaya Police, First Inspector Sulthon NA, said the incident began when the suspect was driving a white car with registration number L 1049 OO and hit an electric taxi on Jalan Taman Apsari.
ENR then fled towards Jalan Gubernur Suryo and hit a person who was behind a pickup truck.
Sulthon said that after the first incident, ENR admitted to panicking and fearing the reaction of residents at the accident scene.
She then sped up her car until the second incident occurred. At the time of the incident, the suspect was driving under the influence of alcohol.
Based on further examination, police stated that the suspect was driving under the influence of alcohol. Officers conducted a direct check after the suspect was detained.
“In our examination, we carried out a breathalyser test, and the result was positive for alcohol. However, in terms of a urine test, we checked for narcotics and none were found,” he said.
Sulthon also revealed the level of alcohol in the suspect’s body, which exceeded reasonable limits.
“A breathalyser examination was carried out. Her alcohol level was 1.06 percent,” he said.
Sulthon stressed that the case would be dealt with firmly in accordance with applicable laws. The suspect is charged with multiple articles carrying a maximum sentence of six years in prison.
“We have charged the perpetrator under Article 310 paragraph 4 in conjunction with Article 106 paragraph 1, with a maximum penalty of six years in prison. We have also added Article 312 in conjunction with Article 231 because at the time of the incident she fled the scene,” he said.
