Surabaya DPRD supports street vendor management with solutions

Surabaya (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the Surabaya Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) Laila Mufidah supports the city government’s move to regulate street vendors (PKL) in all areas, accompanied by solutions. “Let us be orderly together without seizing public facility rights and trading on road shoulders. It can inconvenience others due to congestion,” she said in Surabaya on Thursday. She stated that regulating street vendors is currently a shared concern. As a major city, these street vendors will continue to follow the city’s movement because of the high urban population in a city like Surabaya. Besides being a service city, it is also an economic centre in the capital of East Java province. Street vendors will always exist. In fact, street vendors are always part of urban planning issues. “Besides parking and waste issues, street vendors will continue to be our focus. I am also helped by street vendors. But let us trade in the right places. Not on the edges of roads,” she said. According to her, the city government does not hinder anyone from earning a living and even supports them, as many culinary tourism centres (SWK) have been built to support residents’ economic activities. However, it is hoped that they continue these community economic activities without taking the rights of others, because Surabaya residents have a shared awareness not to violate the rights of others. “They are Surabaya residents with genuine Surabaya ID cards. We must support them in their economic activities,” she said. She appreciated the city government’s move to regulate street vendors with accompanying solutions, as thousands of market stalls have been prepared to accommodate street vendors and overflow market traders. “Many culinary tourism centres have been built in this City of Heroes also as a solution for street vendor management. Although it remains a challenge that not all SWKs are crowded,” she said. She supports the move by Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi to open direct communication with residents through a hotline, allowing all citizens to lodge complaints. “Including street vendor activities in all corners and areas of Surabaya City. However, what must be emphasised is that there should be no new street vendors at any point. The Civil Service Police Unit must monitor intensively,” said Mufidah.
