Surabaya DPRD Supports Market Revitalisation Implementation
Surabaya (ANTARA) - The Surabaya City Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) supports the implementation of the market revitalisation programme by the Surabaya City Government to make it appear more modern. “We assess that this step must be followed by a transformation in management and the mindset of managers and traders,” said Deputy Chairman of the Surabaya City DPRD, Arif Fathoni, in Surabaya on Monday. He stated that the market revitalisation programme in Surabaya City is not merely viewed as a physical project, but as a strategic momentum to change the face of people’s markets to be more modern, clean, and competitive. Arif mentioned that the Surabaya City Government’s commitment to improving markets deserves appreciation, especially the allocation of around Rp19.8 billion for revitalisation this year through the advance submission of budget changes (MPAK). “So far, the impression of traditional markets has been shabby and unclean. Well, this revitalisation must become the momentum to change all that,” he said. Nevertheless, he emphasised that the success of revitalisation cannot rely solely on physical construction. The Surabaya Market Regional Company (PD Pasar Surya) as the manager, he said, must make this programme the initial step to carry out a total rejuvenation of market management. “We hope PD Pasar seizes this as an opportunity to rejuvenate market management. It can no longer run on autopilot,” he said. He exemplified the phenomenon in several large markets like Tanah Abang Market, which is beginning to adapt to digital trends through direct sales based on digital platforms on social media. According to him, a similar approach needs to start being implemented in Surabaya. He encouraged PD Pasar Surya to collaborate with content creators to strengthen the promotion of traditional markets while changing public perception. In addition to digitalisation, trader coaching is also key, as well as emphasising the importance of ongoing education regarding cleanliness, merchandise arrangement, and business management. “Traders must have their skills and abilities improved. How to maintain cleanliness, how to package products, all of that is important,” he said.
