Surabaya clubs finish top in national swimming c'ships

YOGYAKARTA (JP): The 19th national interclub swimming
championships (KRAPNAS) ended here yesterday with Surabaya clubs,
Hiu Club and Surya Naga, coming one-two.

Hiu Club won the meet with a score of 766 and Surya Naga
carded 353 points.

Purwokerto's Bina Taruna Club took the third position after
garnering a total score of 341 in the annual competition which
was held in the Teacher's Training Institute swimming stadium.

On the final day of the three-day championships 17 more
KRAPNAS records were broken, taking the meet's new records total
to 52.

Several swimmers broke more than one KRAPNAS record each
during the championships. Andy Wibowo of Bhumi Phala Club set
five new KRAPNAS records and was crowned best swimmer in the
men's senior groups.

M. Akbar Nasution of Jakarta's Pari Sakti Club also set five
new records and was crowned best junior swimmer of the
championships.

He broke the men's junior records for the 400-meter freestyle,
the 200-meter butterfly, the 100-meter breaststroke and the 400-
meter individual medley.

Akbar yesterday recorded a time of 01:09:96 for the men's
junior 100-meter breaststroke slicing 1.38 seconds off the record
he set in 1996 in Semarang. This record, however, is still below
the national mark of 01:03:72 set by Wirmandi Sugriat in 1991 in
Seattle, Washington, U.S.

In the 400-meter individual medley he recorded a time of four
minutes and 56.79 seconds. The old record of 04:59:25 was set by
Marck Budiman last year.

In the women's senior and junior groups, Silvy Triana and Ati
Yuliani were crowned the best swimmers of the championships
respectively.

Yulius Fernando Tonga and Dyah Ayu Rahmani won the best
positions in the men's and women's beginner groups.

Silvy Triana of Jakarta's Tirtamas Club broke three KRAPNAS
records. Two of them were the 800-meter freestyle and the 100-
meter backstroke.

Ati Yuliani of Temanggung's Bhumi Phala Club's broke four
KRAPNAS records during the championships. She set new records in
the women's junior 400-meter freestyle, the 200-meter individual
medley, the 200-meter freestyle and the 400-meter individual

About 960 swimmers and officials from 74 clubs in 20 provinces
