Surabaya City Government, Pelindo, Pusvetma Tighten Monitoring of Sacrificial Animals

Surabaya City Government has teamed up with PT Pelindo Terminal Petikemas Surabaya and Pusvetma of the Ministry of Agriculture to tighten oversight of sacrificial animals ahead of Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijriah/2026, ensuring animals sold are healthy, safe, and fit for consumption.

Head of the Department of Food Security and Agriculture (DKPP) of Surabaya City, Nanik Sukristina said in Surabaya on Wednesday that the sacrificial-animal surveillance has been underway from 18 May 2026 to 26 May 2026.

‘This surveillance is conducted to ensure that sacrificial animals traded are healthy, safe, and fit for human consumption, so as not to cause issues after purchase or slaughter,’ she said.

Inspections cover administrative and animal-health aspects. Traders are required to carry a Veterinary Health Certificate (SKKH) from their area of origin. In addition, the selling stalls must be identified and obtain permission from the local district (kecamatan).

‘Therefore, we involve the district authorities in field supervision,’ she added.

From a health perspective, teams of veterinarians and veterinary students examined for potential diseases such as Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), scabies, and other contagious diseases. The teams also ensured all animals had vaccination from their origin region.

‘To date, one animal suspected of having scabies was found. The animal was immediately examined and isolated to prevent it from being sold to the public,’ she said.

Corporate Secretary of PT Pelindo Terminal Petikemas, Widyaswendra, said Pelindo provides support for various technical needs used during field inspections, including officer equipment and operational requirements for veterinary personnel.

‘As a business entity, we want to be present and provide tangible benefits to the community,’ he said.

Head of the National Veterinary Farma Centre (Pusvetma) at the Ministry of Agriculture, Edy Budi Susila, said Pusvetma plays an important role as the national reference laboratory for Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).

According to him, Pusvetma’s role is upstream, ensuring that cattle to be used as sacrificial animals have undergone vaccination and health checks.

The FMD vaccine used by farmers across regions is produced directly by Pusvetma. Therefore, Surabaya plays an important national role in controlling livestock diseases, he said.
