Supreme Court Upholds Four-Year Sentence for Undip Lecturer in PPDS Extortion Case

The Ministry of Health stated that the Supreme Court rejected the appeal filed by the defendant, Taufik Eko Nugroho, in the criminal case of extortion within the medical education environment of Diponegoro University (UNDIP) Semarang. With this decision, the four-year prison sentence against the defendant remains in effect.

The decision is outlined in the Decision Extract Number 359 K/Pid/2026, which was issued by the panel of judges during a meeting on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. In its ruling, the Supreme Court rejected the defendant’s appeal and also charged the defendant with the costs of the case.

“The Ministry of Health appreciates the entire legal process and supports efforts to enforce the law in order to create a safe, professional, and ethical educational and healthcare environment,” said the Head of the Bureau of Communication and Public Information of the Ministry of Health, Aji Muhawarman, in a statement on Friday (May 15).

Aji said that this is a follow-up to the Ministry of Health’s investigation regarding alleged bullying and extortion against Aulia Risma Lestari, a student in the Specialist Doctor Education Program (PPDS) in Anesthesiology at Undip.

He said that the defendant, Taufik Eko Nugroho, is known to be a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine at UNDIP Semarang.

Previously, the case was decided by the Semarang District Court through Decision Number 189/Pid.B/2025/PN Smg on October 1, 2025.

In the same case, the panel of judges also imposed a nine-month prison sentence on two other defendants, namely dr. Zara Yupita Azra, a senior student in the Specialist Doctor Education Program (PPDS), and Sri Maryani, who is an administrative staff member of the PPDS.

The decision was then upheld by the Central Java High Court on November 19, 2025.

Aji also expressed his appreciation to the Central Java Police and the Central Java High Prosecutor’s Office for handling the case.

“We thank the police, the prosecutor’s office, and all law enforcement officers who have followed up on this case in accordance with applicable regulations,” he said.

The Ministry of Health will continue to strengthen supervision of the implementation of medical education to prevent practices of intimidation, bullying, or abuse of authority in the health workforce environment.

“We will continue to evaluate the medical education system, especially the residency program, to ensure protection for all students from all forms of improper practice,” he said. (H-2)
