Supreme Court Rejects Cassation Appeal of UNDIP PPDS Lecturer, Sentence Remains 4 Years
The Supreme Court (MA) has rejected the cassation petition filed by the defendant Taufik Eko Nugroho SpAn MSiMed in the extortion case within the Anaesthesiology Specialist Medical Education Programme (PPDS) at Diponegoro University (UNDIP), Semarang.
With this decision, the four-year prison sentence against the lecturer in question has officially gained legal force or inkracht.
The Supreme Court’s ruling is contained in the Excerpt of Decision Number 359 K/Pid/2026, decided on Tuesday (24/2). In addition to rejecting the defendant’s cassation, the MA also imposed court costs on the individual and upheld the previous decision of the Central Java High Court.
This case has drawn public attention due to its connection to alleged bullying practices and extortion in the UNDIP medical education environment.
Citing Detik, the case is a follow-up to an investigation by the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) regarding allegations of bullying and abuse of authority in the anaesthesiology specialist medical education programme.
The investigation began with the death of a PPDS Anaesthesiology student at UNDIP, the late dr Aulia Risma Lestari. Kemenkes then conducted an internal review that uncovered allegations of bullying practices and extortion in that residency education environment.
Kemenkes subsequently reported these findings to law enforcement authorities as part of efforts to create a safer and healthier medical education environment.
In the same case cluster, the previous panel of judges had also imposed nine-month prison sentences on two other defendants, namely senior PPDS student dr Zara Yupita Azra and administrative staff Sri Maryani.
In response to the Supreme Court’s decision, Kemenkes expressed appreciation for the ongoing law enforcement process.
The Head of the Bureau of Communication and Public Information of Kemenkes, Aji Muhawarman, emphasised that the government fully supports the crackdown on all forms of intimidation and abuse of authority in the medical education environment.
“The Ministry of Health appreciates the entire legal process that has taken place and supports law enforcement efforts to create a safe, professional, and integrity-based education and health service environment,” Aji stated in a written release on Thursday (14/5).
He affirmed that supervision of medical education implementation will continue to be tightened to prevent intimidation practices, bullying, or abuse of authority by rogue health workers or lecturers.
Kemenkes also urged the public and students who are aware of similar practices not to hesitate to report them through official channels.
“We will continue to evaluate the medical education system, particularly the residency programme, to ensure protection for all students from all forms of reprehensible practices,” Aji said.
