Supreme Court Rejects Appeal in Undip Medical Education Extortion Case, 4-Year Sentence Becomes Final

The Supreme Court (MA) has rejected the cassation petition filed by the defendant, Dr. Taufik Eko Nugroho, in the criminal extortion case within the medical education environment at Diponegoro University (Undip), Semarang. This decision is recorded in the Excerpt of Decision Number 359 K/Pid/2026, decided in a judges’ panel deliberation meeting on Tuesday (24/2/2026).

In its operative part, the MA stated that it rejected the defendant’s cassation petition and imposed the costs of the case on him. With this decision, the four-year prison sentence as ruled by the Central Java High Court has become legally binding or final.

This case was previously decided at the Semarang District Court level through Decision Number 189/Pid.B/2025/PN Smg on 1 October 2025. The defendant, Taufik Eko Nugroho, is known to be a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, Undip, Semarang.

In the same case cluster, the judges’ panel also imposed a nine-month prison sentence on two other defendants, namely Dr. Zara Yupita Azra (senior PPDS student) and Sri Maryani (PPDS administrative staff). The decisions against these defendants were later upheld by the Central Java High Court on 19 November 2025.

This case is a follow-up to the Ministry of Health’s investigation into allegations of bullying and extortion against a female student in the Anaesthesiology Specialist Doctor Education Programme (PPDS) at Undip, the late Dr. Aulia Risma Lestari.

The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) was the first party to uncover this case through an internal investigation and reported it to the police to break the chain of unethical practices in the residency education environment.
