Supratman wins Levi's band contest

JAKARTA (JP): W.R. Supratman of SMU Islam Harapan Ibu senior high school in Jakarta stole the Levi's Music Brawl contest at Bengkel Nightpark discotheque in South Jakarta on Sunday.

For beating the five other finalists, the band received a trophy, Rp 3 million (US$405) in cash and gifts from the sponsors, the organizer said in a statement on Monday.

The band was also chosen by the 2,000 spectators as their favorite band, it said.

The panel of judges in the second annual music contest designed specially for senior high school bands included noted guitarist Ian Antono.

Second place went to Awan of SMU 6, also from Jakarta, while Lighter of SMU Kertajaya from Surabaya came third.

The bands took home trophies, gifts and cash worth Rp 2 million and Rp 1.5 million respectively.

The organizers invited 10 bands to take part in the competition, which had the theme of demonstration.

The finalists were selected from cassette recordings sent in by 90 senior high school bands; 49 bands from Jakarta, 18 from Surabaya and the remaining 23 from Bandung and Yogyakarta. (jun)
