Supporting Green Mining, PLN Ready to Supply Green Electricity in the Mining Sector
PT PLN (Persero) is reinforcing its commitment to supporting the transformation of the mining sector through strategic collaborations with several coal producers. This partnership is realised through the signing of Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) and Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) for Integrated Business Solutions to promote mine operational electrification. The agreements, marked by the PPA and MoU, have been established with PT Trubaindo Coal Mining for 30 MVA, PT Sembada Makmur Sejahtera for 55 MVA, PT Marga Bara Jaya for 35 MVA, PT Maruwai Coal for 71 MVA, PT Makmur Sejahtera Wisesa for 106 MVA, and PT Berau Coal for 29 MVA. Meanwhile, for the Integrated Business Solution, PLN through its subsidiaries has collaborated with several companies, including PT Masmindo Dwi Area for the construction of customer installations and substations, PT Maruwai Coal for customer-owned installation construction, and PT Sembada Makmur Sejahtera for engineering design and high-voltage installation construction. This collaboration represents a concrete step by PLN in supporting the implementation of green mining through the utilisation of cleaner, more efficient, and reliable electric energy to support the electrification of heavy equipment in mining. Coordinator for Coal Mineral Conservation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Ari Hendrawanto, explained that the electrification of heavy equipment is the key to reducing emissions in mine operational areas. This step is crucial given the national goal of achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060 or earlier. He stated that emission reduction strategies are carried out through various approaches, such as reducing production, substituting energy with other sources like biomass, and increasing efficiency and electrification. “The electrification of heavy equipment is one of the main solutions, given that the largest energy consumption is in transportation and material handling activities,” said Ari during the Focus Group Discussion Powering The Future of Green Mining in Jakarta last week. Ari added that this transition provides financial benefits to industry players. With the current comparison of diesel prices and electricity tariffs, there is potential for operational cost savings of up to Rp 2 billion per year for each heavy equipment unit. “If implemented widely, the resulting efficiency will be very significant,” he added. Director of Retail and Commerce at PT PLN (Persero), Adi Priyanto, emphasised that the urgency of the energy transition is not merely to address climate challenges but also a strategy to strengthen national energy independence. “The development of green mining in the mining sector is one of the strategic solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while ensuring the sustainability of the coal industry in the future,” said Adi in a statement quoted on Tuesday (21/4/2026). According to Adi, PLN is ready to provide full support to all industry players through various innovative services tailored to the specific needs of mining operations. “This forum is an opportunity to identify the potential growth in electricity demand in the mining sector, determine the optimal service limits of PLN, and formulate strategies for managing electrical assets post-mine life,” explained Adi. From an operational technical perspective, Executive Vice President of Sales and Enterprise Customer Service at PLN, Dini Sulistyawati, identified that the critical point of energy consumption is in the mine output transportation stage. “Therefore, the utilisation of clean energy based on electricity in this hauling process is one of the concrete steps to improve operational efficiency while also reducing emissions,” said Dini. In response to the collaboration, the General Chairman of the Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI), Priyadi, welcomed this synergy positively as a joint effort to shorten the supply chain of imported fossil energy for industry sustainability. “This is a good opportunity for us coal producers as well as PLN as the power provider. So that this creates the most beneficial mutual symbiosis,” added Priyadi. Positive responses were also given by PLN customers, PT Borneo Indobara (BIB), as users of PLN services for green mining. Division Head of Project Expansion at PT Borneo Indobara, Adi Supriyatna, stated that electrification is a strategic step for the company in responding to climate change challenges as well as fuel price fluctuation pressures. According to him, the electrification of PT Borneo Indobara is a strategic step towards green mining to respond to the threat of climate change and the trend of rising fuel prices. “This transition is supported by massive electrical infrastructure development together with PLN to operate various electric heavy equipment and charging stations for 700 electric trucks,” he concluded.
