Supporting Domestic Industry, KAI Introduces Flatbed Carriage Services from Banyuwangi to South Sumatra
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI continues to deliver hundreds of flatbed carriages to bolster national logistics services, serving as a tangible form of support for domestic products. Flatbed carriages are used to transport industrial materials up to energy resources. This demonstrates KAI’s commitment to accelerating national industrial independence, particularly in South Sumatra. In this effort, 780 units of carriages (13 train sets) have arrived in Palembang by mid-April 2026. All these carriages are ready to strengthen national logistics distribution. KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that the strengthening of freight transport facilities is directed to ensure the consistent and timely distribution of strategic commodities, including coal for power plants. “On the other hand, the use of domestic products is an important part in creating added value for the national industry,” she said in a written statement received by Kompas.com on Friday (17/4/2026). This strategic step is expected to increase the capacity and competitiveness of rail-based freight transport, while reinforcing support for domestic products. This development direction also supports the shift in logistics distribution to more efficient and low-emission modes. Anne added that the procurement is part of KAI’s long-term steps in achieving the 2029 Long-Term Business Plan (RJPP) targets. In the RJPP 2029, coal transport is targeted at 111.2 million tonnes and non-coal goods at 10.9 million tonnes. She emphasised that through this facility strengthening, KAI continues to expand its role in the national logistics system. “Every delivery that runs, besides maintaining the smooth distribution of goods and energy supplies, also becomes part of support for the advancement of the national industry,” said Anne. By mid-April 2026, 13 train sets (TS) or equivalent to 780 carriage units have been at Simpang, Division III Palembang. These carriages were produced at PT INKA’s facilities in Banyuwangi with a high domestic component level (TKDN).
