Supported by PNM, Mrs Wulan Successfully Transforms Small Business into Family Support

In Denpasar, Bali, the story of Mrs Wulan serves as an example of a woman’s determination in facing economic limitations. Starting from a condition of unemployment, difficulty paying for her children’s school fees, and not yet owning a home, she chose to persevere by starting a simple business selling lime leaves. This journey was undertaken with support and guidance from PNM Mekaar, which helped her rise gradually.

In the process, Mrs Wulan did not walk alone. PNM mentors, known as the “white and blue sisters,” provided directions while introducing her to fellow female customers. This environment became a space for sharing experiences and motivation to keep striving amid limitations.

For Mrs Wulan, the struggle was not just for herself, but for the future of her children and family. She emphasised that the determination not to give up is the key to running the business started from scratch. Support and guidance also played an important role in getting through difficult times.

Over time, the small business she ran began to show results. From selling lime leaves, Mrs Wulan is now able to school both her children, build a house, and develop other businesses such as ironing services and on-call catering. This development reflects a gradual improvement in the family’s economic condition.

The story also shows that empowering ultra-micro businesses does not only depend on access to capital, but also on continuous guidance. Interactions among group members and support from mentors are considered to play a role in building confidence and business capacity for customers.

PNM Company Secretary, Dodot Patria Ary, stated that Mrs Wulan’s experience is a real picture of the potential of Indonesian women when they receive proper guidance. According to him, every mother has the opportunity to develop and become the main support for the family’s economy.

PNM, he continued, is committed to continuing to present empowerment programmes for underprivileged communities. These efforts are not only aimed at supporting business sustainability, but also helping to create a more prosperous life for customers’ families.
