Supply Dependency from Outside the Region Triggers Food Price Increases in East Kalimantan ahead of Eid
Samarinda — Several prices for essential commodities in East Kalimantan are projected to increase ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1447 AH. The provincial government is ensuring food supply remains secure and distribution proceeds smoothly.
Heni Purwaningsih, head of the East Kalimantan Department of Industry, Trade, Cooperatives, and Small and Medium Enterprises, stated that price increases ahead of Ramadan and Eid are an annual pattern.
“Regarding essential commodity prices, there are indeed several commodities projected to experience price increases. But this happens almost every year,” said Heni in Samarinda on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.
The increases are driven by a surge in public demand ahead of the major religious holiday. This situation prompts price adjustments at the trader and distributor levels.
Heni explained that supply dependency on areas outside the region also influences prices. Approximately 70 to 80 per cent of essential commodity needs in East Kalimantan are still supplied from other provinces.
“Overall, around 70 to 80 per cent of our essential commodity needs are still supplied from outside East Kalimantan,” she said.
If distribution is disrupted or demand increases, prices in the local market tend to rise. Nevertheless, the government is ensuring food stocks remain secure. The distribution of essential commodities is said to be proceeding smoothly without significant obstacles.
“Overall, our stocks are secure. There are no distribution constraints or other obstacles affecting commodity availability,” said Heni.
