Supermarkets
Your correspondent James Richards (The Jakarta Post, Jan. 4, 1995) may be correct in his call to boycott Jakarta 's most prestigious supermarket. However, it is just this "prestige atmosphere," and an adequate supply of apparently overpaid shoppers (or should I use the term "clientele?") to whom said proprietor has cleverly pitched his wares and his prices! To be fair, said owner has not been shy in publicly stating what Mr. Richards' friend overheard.
It's your choice Mr. Richards, if you don't have a need for the goods or to be "seen" then shop elsewhere like we other regular palefaces. But bring along some candy so you won't be shortchanged, the chain supermarkets have their own ways of ripping we consumers off too.
