Sunway Healthcare Group's Grand Business Plan: Targeting Kalimantan
Kuala Lumpur, CNBC Indonesia - Sunway Healthcare Group plans to continue increasing the number of Sunway Medical Centres over the next few years. This plan was shared by Chelsea Cheng, Chief Financial Officer of Sunway Healthcare Group, during a discussion at The Library Sunway Sanctuary, Sunway City, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Friday (28/08/2026).
Currently, there are five Sunway Medical Centres spread across five regions in Malaysia: Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, Velocity Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Damansara, and Ipoh. Specifically, Sunway Medical Centre serves as the flagship hospital.
“Currently, we have three hospitals in the pipeline that are confirmed for construction,” said Chelsea.
First is the Sunway Medical Centre in Johor. Its location is very close to Singapore. According to Chelsea, there will be a supporting ecosystem for Sunway Medical Centre Johor, similar to what is available in Sunway City, ranging from hotels and malls to offices.
“The first phase will have a capacity of 400 beds,” Chelsea stated.
She explained that management is also considering the creation of senior living services (nursing homes), as Singapore is currently experiencing an ageing population.
“The presence of a hospital in Johor also provides an advantage over competitors. This hospital is also aimed at Malaysian and Indonesian families who wish to seek a second opinion. We see an opportunity here,” said Chelsea.
Second is the Sunway Medical Centre in Seremban. This area is located 16 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur. According to Chelsea, Sunway Medical Centre Seremban is planned to have a capacity of 270 beds.
Third is the Sunway Medical Centre in Putrajaya. Malaysia’s administrative capital is 30 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur but is close to the airport. The location of Sunway Medical Centre Putrajaya is situated opposite an MRT station.
Another advantage, according to Chelsea, is its proximity to Putrajaya Hospital and the National Cancer Institute. This is important because doctors practising in government hospitals are permitted to practise in private hospitals one day a week.
“Those are the three hospitals confirmed to be built in the near future,” said Chelsea.
Regarding East Malaysia, she explained that management is interested in building a hospital in Sarawak, specifically in Kuching. Many people from Kalimantan travel there for medical treatment.
“We are still searching for the right location.”
Furthermore, she did not deny that global economic uncertainty has contributed to rising hospital construction costs. However, Sunway possesses a solid construction arm, allowing these construction costs to be controlled.
