Sunu captures ITF junior tennis crown

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Sunu Wahyu Trijati of Indonesia won the boys' singles crown of
the ITF (International Tennis Federation) Junior Tennis
Championship here on Sunday, after beating Luke Campbell of
Britain in the final match, which was interrupted by rain.

Fourth-seeded Sunu overcame Campbell 6-3, 7-5, at the
Kemayoran Tennis Court in Central Jakarta to chalk up his second
title following his victory in Surabaya, East Jakarta, last
November.

"I was relaxed, not letting pressure overwhelm me. I just
tried hard to play as best as I could. It worked well," said Sunu
after his match, as quoted by Antara.

Sunu, a 15-year-old Jakartan and member of the Deddy Prasetyo
Tennis Club, praised his opponent's well-hit returns. However, he
said that the Briton looked inconsistent throughout.

"He displayed powerful shots with speed. His returns troubled
me, but consistency deserted him," said Sunu.

After tight games in the first set, Sunu again endured a
difficult encounter in the second set. The score was 3-3 when the
rain began, and the referee called for a half-hour delay.

The two players took up where they left off in their battle
upon resuming play, before the local hopeful broke his opponent's
serve to lead at 6-5.

When he held the serve, he did not squander the advantage to
close the set for his win, to the home fans' cheering delight.

Sunu rounded out his triumphant day with a victory in the
doubles, teaming up with Kirati Siributwong of Thailand.

Sunu/Siributwong were stretched to a three-set final match
before defeating the Indonesian twin pair of Imanuel Prakoso and
Imanuel Prabowo 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 6-2.

However, the Indonesian team's hopes for another victory in
the girls' singles division did not materialize, as Maya Rosa
failed to hold onto her lead against top seed Chan Yung-Jan of
Chinese Taipei.

Maya, who was seeded fifth at the tournament, grabbed the
opening set only to fall in the remaining sets in the match,
which was also halted by rain.

After being crushed 0-6 in the second set, Maya tried to raise
her game. She caught up with Chan at 3-3, but the latter proved
to be the mightier, sealing the deciding set at 6-3.

"What a miss. After winning the opening set, I rushed into the
second set and lost," said 16-year-old Maya.

Maya compensated for the loss by taking the doubles title with
Septi Mende. Maya/Septi struggled bravely to upset the Korean-
Chinese Taipei top-seeded pair of Heesun Lyoo-suh and Chan Yung-
Jan 7-6 (7/1), 7-6 (7/5).
