Sunaryo sets hat trick as Lampung lifters reign
JAKARTA (JP): Sunaryo of Jambi broke three records at the end
of the national weight lifting championships here yesterday, but
Lampung remained the country's strongest powerhouse of the
muscular sport.
Competing in the 108-kilogram division, Sunaryo set new
records in the snatch, clean and jerk and total weight
categories. There were four records shattered at the conclusion
of the four-day meet, taking the tally of new national marks to
seven.
Sunaryo snatched 137.5kg to smash the old record of 130.5 set
by Junaidi of West Java during a national selection for the 18th
Southeast Asian Games in Chiang Mai, Thailand, last December.
In the clean and jerk event, Sunaryo lifted 177.5kg to beat
Adi Chondro's two-year-old mark set in the 1993 National Games by
2.5 kilograms.
Sunaryo's two record-breaking lifts led him to a new total
record of 315kg, which is 10kg better than Adi's gold medal
winning mark in the 1993 National Games.
Mahfud of East Java lengthened the list of record breakers
with his brilliant performance in the men's over-108kg category.
Lifting 170 kilograms, Mahfud rewrote the old national clean
and jerk record of 167.5kg established by I Nyoman Ari of Bali in
the 1993 National Games here. Mahfud's total lifting, 302.5kg,
was 2.5kg lighter than his own national record he totaled in the
Games.
The weight lifting contest is part of the national weight
lifting, power lifting and bodybuilding championships which serve
as a qualifying round for the 14th National Games, scheduled here
in September.
Sunaryo's victory took his team's medal collection to six
golds and a bronze to stay a distant third behind runaway leader
Lampung which romped home with 18 golds, eight silvers and six
bronzes. West Java came second with 14 golds, seven silvers and
10 bronzes.
Soesilo Soedarman, chairman of the Indonesian Weight lifting,
Power lifting and Bodybuilding Association, yesterday expressed
his delight that the record breakers were mostly junior lifters.
"Isn't it encouraging? These results reflect a good training
and regeneration system," said Soedarman, who is also
Coordinating Minister for Political Affairs and Security.
The weight lifting contest was directly continued with the
power lifting meet yesterday. The bodybuilding contest will run
tomorrow. (arf)
