Jakarta (ANTARA) – Solar power developer SUN is expanding its role as an independent power producer (IPP) to support clean energy development and is expected to increase private-sector participation in the development of 100 gigawatts-peak (GWp) of solar energy in Indonesia.

“We want to take the company’s experience further through increasingly integrated electrification systems, from clean energy to its use,” SUN Director of Power Jefferson Kuesar said in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday.

He said the company wanted to strengthen the development of large-scale solar power plants (PLTS) in support of the government’s 100 GWp solar programme.

SUN is also stepping up development of larger-scale solar projects as part of the company’s long-term growth agenda, he said.

Indonesia has solar energy potential of around 3,200 GWp, he added, creating significant scope for solar power development in the commercial and industrial sectors as well as in large-scale projects.

“SUN currently has a pipeline of more than 40 MWp of solar energy projects across several parts of Indonesia, all of which are still at the development stage,” he said.

In its first decade in the clean energy industry, SUN has developed more than 500 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity through over 400 projects.

The achievement marks the company’s progress in expanding solar adoption in the commercial and industrial sectors, while laying the foundation for its next growth phase as an electrification partner for industry in Indonesia.

Since its establishment in 2016, SUN has grown alongside rising industrial demand for energy that is more efficient, low-carbon and reliable, he said.

SUN’s portfolio now includes projects in Indonesia, Australia, Vietnam and Thailand, spanning mining, cement, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), logistics, paper, packaging, electronics, automotive components and pharmaceuticals.

Beyond installed capacity, the portfolio’s growth reflects the increasingly widespread use of clean energy as part of strategies to improve industrial efficiency and competitiveness.

Based on estimated clean energy production in 2026, SUN’s projects are expected to contribute to an emissions reduction of around 244,549 tonnes of CO2 a year, equivalent to planting approximately 4.06 million trees.

“SUN’s first ten years have shown that the energy transition can go hand in hand with industry’s need for efficiency, reliability and competitiveness,” he said.

As it enters its next phase, SUN is expanding its solutions beyond solar power development to more integrated electrification systems.

These solutions include solar power plants, energy storage and management systems, electric vehicles, charging infrastructure and digital systems to support energy and fleet management, he said.

He added that the company would strengthen the development of clean energy and electrification assets for strategic sectors.

By integrating solar power, energy storage, energy management systems, fleet electrification, charging infrastructure and digital systems, SUN aims to help customers improve operational efficiency, strengthen energy security and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

“To speed up implementation, we will continue to collaborate with the government, regulators, PLN, industry associations, industrial estate managers, financing institutions, technology partners, suppliers and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors,” he added.

With a decade of experience developing clean energy projects, SUN is entering its next growth phase by strengthening its role as an electrification partner for industry, while contributing to improved industrial competitiveness and accelerating Indonesia’s energy transition.
