Summoning of Meta and Google Proves Indonesia's Seriousness in Enforcing PP Tunas
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Cybersecurity expert from Vaksincom, Alfons Tanujaya, stated that the summoning of Meta and Google, as owners of digital platforms that failed to comply with child user age restriction requirements, serves as proof of the state’s seriousness in providing protection for children in the digital realm. The regulation in question is Government Regulation number 17 of 2025 on Child Protection Governance in the Administration of Electronic Systems (PP Tunas), which has been in effect since 28 March 2026. “The government is extremely serious about this issue. We applaud the serious attention given. The implementation is no joke. Electronic system providers (PSE) are obligated. It is evident that the government is preparing it step by step, and the implementation also involves many related sectors,” Alfons told ANTARA on Thursday. Alfons stated that the enforcement of PP Tunas, led by the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi), is already appropriate because it is carried out gradually and does not immediately shut down access to digital platforms. From the ongoing process and announcements to the public, society should be able to assess the seriousness of each digital platform in preparing a safe digital space for the nation’s next generation. “So what Kemkomdigi is doing is correct. First, they are reprimanded, given warnings. Then, if they still don’t comply over time, stricter actions will be taken,” said Alfons. To strengthen the effectiveness of PP Tunas enforcement, social media observer Enda Nasution shared his view that the government should conduct periodic evaluations regarding positive impacts and challenges faced in creating a child-friendly digital space. According to him, this evaluation needs to be communicated transparently to the public so that in the future, it is clear that social media restrictions for children are indeed necessary to maintain the quality of the nation’s next generation. He assessed that the government’s seriousness in enforcing PP Tunas is already good, but its effectiveness will be more optimal if supported by collaboration between society and the industry, in this case, the PSE as digital platform developers. Enda opined that the government cannot implement this regulation alone; collaboration must continue because this step is key to ensuring Indonesia’s digital space grows as a healthy ecosystem and not merely an industry. “The government cannot do this alone. It must collaborate with the industry, must collaborate with users. So that this is not just an industry, but I see it as a real ecosystem that can grow together, and the effects will be positive for everyone,” Enda concluded his statement.
