WASHINGTON (Reuters): U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers
will visit India, Indonesia and Japan next week to survey Asia's
economic landscape after the region has come through the thick of
its worst financial crisis in half a century.
In a statement, the Treasury Department said Summers would
visit Bombay, New Delhi, Bangalore and Jakarta for meetings with
government officials and business leaders before attending a
meeting of finance ministers from the Group of Seven top
industrial nations in Tokyo on Jan. 22.
Summers was scheduled to address the Confederation of Indian
Industry in Bombay on Jan. 17. On Jan. 20, he was due to speak at
a luncheon in Jakarta jointly hosted by the Indonesian Economists
Association and the American Chamber of Commerce.
He was expected to lay out a more detailed agenda for the trip
during a speech he is due to give in Washington on Friday.
