Summers to meet S'pore PM

SINGAPORE (Reuters): U.S. Deputy Treasury Secretary Lawrence
Summers will call on Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong early
on Monday, a government statement said on Saturday.

Singapore is the first stop in Summers' whirlwind Asian tour
to assess the region's deepening economic crisis.

Summers' visit, to express American support for Asian
stabilization, includes Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.

President Bill Clinton spoke late on Thursday to Goh and
Indonesia's President Soeharto to discuss the regional economic
situation and announced Summers' tour after those conversations.

The U.S. Treasury said Summers' trip was assembled in a hurry
after being announced by the White House on Thursday and could
expand to include other countries.
