Summarecon builds military sector base

JAKARTA (JP): Private property developer PT Summarecon Agung handed over a building yesterday to be used as a military sector base at its Kelapa Gading housing complex in North Jakarta.

Sumarecon's president, Soetjipto Nagaria, symbolically handed over the building, which cost Rp 170 million (US$64,150) to build, to Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen. Sutiyoso.

During the ceremony yesterday, Sutiyoso also received land titles certificates for the building from North Jakarta Mayor Suprawito. The site for the Kelapa Gading military sector office is owned by the city administration.

The building has a 350-square-meter office, a 150-square-meter meeting room, a dormitory and a park outside.

In his speech, Sutiyoso praised Summarecon for delivering a good building.

"The presence of the new military base will help secure the Kelapa Gading housing complex and ensure a safe atmosphere for its residents," said the two-star general, who has been widely tipped to be the next governor of Jakarta.

The newly inaugurated Kelapa Gading military sector is one of 48 in the city.

According to Soetjipto, Summarecon has also built, or is planning to build, several other public and social facilities, including a mosque, a health center, schools, parks, a fire brigade station and a police subprecinct office.

The facilities are to be completed in the next five years.

He denied reports that Summarecon had failed to provide public and social facilities in the Kelapa Gading housing complex.

"The criticisms were made by people who don't like us. We started to build the facilities ten years ago," he said. (jun)
