Sumitomo builds RI tire plant

TOKYO (AFX-ASIA): Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd will spend 10
billion yen to build a tire plant in Indonesia, the Nihon Keizai
Shimbun reported.

The plant is scheduled to start operations in January 2002, it
said.

The company will supply tires to Japanese car makers in
southeast Asia, as well as exporting its products to Japan, it
said.

The company will expand the capacity of the plant to 10,000
tires a day by the end of 2005, it said.

The company's Indonesian unit will spend 2 billion yen to
increase the capacity of its existing plant to 6,000 tires a day
from 4,500, it said.
