Sumatran tiger enters West Sumatra BKSDA trap after eating livestock

One Sumatran tiger entered a trap belonging to the West Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) in Kampuang Tengek, Jorong Palimbatan, Nagari Pasia Laweh, Palupuh District, Agam Regency, on Tuesday night.

Head of the Maninjau Region II Conservation Office of BKSDA West Sumatra, Ade Putra, said the tiger entered the trap on Tuesday (11/8) at around 7.35 pm local time.

“The tiger entered the trap less than an hour after we installed it at the location,” he said.

He said the trap was installed after the young female tiger ate a goat belonging to a resident named Afkir Soni (45) on Sunday (9/8).

The nagari government reported the incident to BKSDA West Sumatra and officers immediately went to the location to handle the situation by conducting field verification, interviewing the livestock owner, and searching for signs of the animal’s presence.

“After receiving the report, BKSDA West Sumatra officers immediately went to the location to handle the situation,” he said.

He added that the location is in a residential area, near SDN 10 Angge Palimbatan and SMPN 1 Palupuh.

Given these conditions, BKSDA West Sumatra officers together with the Nagari Patrol Team (Pagari), the Indonesian National Armed Forces, the National Police and the nagari government installed the trap not far from the goat pen.

Shortly after arriving at the accommodation, the Jorong Palimbatan head reported that the guard of SDN 10 Angge Palimbatan heard the trap door close.

“Upon receiving the report, we immediately went to the location to confirm and it turned out the tiger had already entered the trap. The trap was installed at around 6.30 pm, and the tiger entered the trap measuring two metres in length and 90 centimetres in width at 7.35 pm,” he said.

BKSDA West Sumatra is currently preparing to evacuate the tiger.
