Sumatran Tiger Appearance in Riau Village Halts Face-to-Face Schooling

The appearance of a Sumatran tiger in a residential area of Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau, has paralysed local activities and triggered a shift to remote learning. The presence of the critically endangered predator in Sungai Danai Village, Pulau Burung District, caused panic after it reportedly attacked livestock. In response to the safety threat, the local government has temporarily suspended all face-to-face teaching. The Head of the Indragiri Hilir Education Office, Abdul Rasyid, confirmed that all school activities in the village have been moved to a home-based learning system until the area is declared safe. Sungai Danai Village Head Halim stated that the community is deeply alarmed, particularly after a cow was found with severe leg injuries believed to be caused by a tiger attack. The village administration has sent an official letter to the Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) requesting the immediate deployment of a wildlife conflict mitigation team to handle the situation. Residents remain on high alert and are limiting outdoor activities while awaiting the arrival of the BBKSDA team to evacuate the protected animal.
