Sumatran elephant born in animal park

BOGOR: Taman Safari Indonesia in Cisarua, Bogor, celebrated the birth of a female Sumatran elephant on Monday, Antara reported on Tuesday.

"The delivery was normal," said keeper Suparno.

The 60-kilogram Ani is the third offspring of Marsini and David, both 37 years old.

According to the park's conservation site executive, Ami Prastiti, nine endangered Sumatran elephants have now been born at the park.

"The total number of the protected species now living at the conservation site here is 34, while Taman Safari Indonesia II in Prigen, East Java, has 22," she said. -- JP
