Sumatra to Have 541 km Gas Transmission Pipeline, Set for Completion in 2028

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) continues to accelerate the development of national natural gas infrastructure. One of the key projects is the construction of the Dumai-Sei Mangkei (Dusem) transmission pipeline spanning 541 kilometres (km) in Sumatra.

Director General of Oil and Gas at the Ministry of ESDM, Laode Sulaeman, said the construction of the Dusem transmission pipeline is part of efforts to strengthen the connectivity of national natural gas infrastructure.

According to him, the government previously completed the first phase of the transmission pipeline, spanning 60 km, in 2023. The second phase, spanning 240 km, has also been completed.

“Currently under construction is the completion of the Dumai-Sei Mangkei transmission pipeline spanning 541 km, and this is already progressing. Progress to date is around 30%. God willing, by early 2028 the Dumai-Sei Mangkei pipeline can be completed,” Laode said during a hearing with Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives on Wednesday (26/8/2026).

Laode explained that the connection of the Dumai-Sei Mangkei pipeline will strengthen the natural gas transmission network from Aceh to East Java. With the network connected, natural gas distribution can be carried out through various points along the existing pipeline network.

“And once this pipeline is connected, the major transmission pipeline from Aceh to East Java for natural gas will be available, and gas delivery patterns can be carried out at every point where these pipelines are located,” he said.
