Sumardji Reveals Elkan Baggott's Response After Being Called Up to Indonesia National Team Again
Sumardji, head of the National Team Board (BTN), has confirmed that Elkan Baggott will attend following his first call-up to the Indonesia national team in the past two years.
Elkan Baggott is among the players selected by John Herdman for the Indonesia national team’s preliminary squad ahead of the FIFA Series 2026.
John Herdam has named 41 players to participate in centralised training before the squad is narrowed down to 23 players for the final selection.
After being absent for two years since his last appearance for the national team at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup under Shin Tae-yong’s management, the Ipswich Town player will make his return.
The call-up of Elkan Baggott is a request from John Herdman, who has been monitoring the player’s performances whilst at Ipswich Town.
“I believe this all aligns with the coach’s requirements,” Sumardji told reporters on Friday (13 March 2026), as quoted by BolaSport.com.
Elkan Baggott is expected to arrive on 23 March 2026 to participate in the centralised training camp under John Herdman’s direction.
“We have already sent the call-up letter to Elkan Baggott.”
“He is willing to come,” said Sumardji.
The tall stature of the “Big Man” will certainly be valuable for Indonesia’s defence, which now regularly relies on Jay Idzes, Justin Hubner and Rizky Ridho.
“All players are indeed being monitored by John Herdman.”
“Previously, during his presentation before becoming coach, he mentioned several names,” said Sumardji.
