Sultan HB X Requests Development in Gunungkidul Not Limited to Pansela Area, But...
The Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono (HB) X, has requested that development in Gunungkidul not focus solely on the southern coastal area (Pansela). The Sultan called for even development, including the establishment of Lumbung Mataraman. Ngarsa Dalem stated that the conditions in Gunungkidul have changed from 10-15 years ago. The Sultan cited infrastructure development, such as roads in Gunungkidul, which is now adequate, though still minimal. “But reaching Gunungkidul from the western, northern, eastern, and southern ends is now facilitated. Now, how can development be more even, not just the coast,” said Sultan HB X to reporters at Taman Budaya (TBG), Wonosari, Gunungkidul, on Wednesday (8/4/2026). Sultan HB X mentioned that even development would positively impact society, particularly the economy. “But it can also extend to other areas so that residents enjoy growth with equality,” he said. “Even formally, it all contributes to economic growth for the welfare of society throughout Gunungkidul and also high growth for Gunungkidul’s achievements,” continued Ngarsa Dalem. Moreover, the Sultan assessed that development in the Pansela area of Gunungkidul has been massive due to many investors entering. This differs from other areas in Gunungkidul that may not yet have attracted investors. “That’s why my hope to accelerate that, I have a programme for Lumbung Mataraman. Now the Merah Putih Cooperative and parts of that,” he stated. The Sultan believes the existence of Lumbung Mataraman can help the lives of the community, especially the less fortunate. Where the less fortunate can plant in Lumbung Mataraman. “My hope is that those who are less fortunate can plant, and perhaps we provide initially one hectare. It might not only be agriculture, but also laying hens or broilers because we already have cooperation with MBG (Makan Bergizi Gratis),” he said. With this cooperation, the agricultural produce from residents planting in Lumbung Mataraman can be well distributed. In addition, community welfare will subsequently improve. “So the money flows to the village, thus Lumbung Mataraman will be accelerated because it provides welfare equality for the less fortunate community,” he said.
