Sultan Appoints Paku Alam X as Acting Governor of Yogyakarta

The Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) Secretary, Ni Made Dwi Panti Indrayanti, confirmed that Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X has appointed his deputy, KGPAA Paku Alam X, as the acting governor. She explained that the appointment is a standard and normative administrative procedure in governance. This temporary replacement, she clarified, is a standard mechanism applied whenever the head of an institution is unable to perform their duties for any reason. “It is a very normal and common procedure if the head of an institution is unable to carry out duties for any reason, whether due to illness, official travel, or leave,” Ni Made stated on Thursday. She emphasised that the appointment is intended to ensure that the administration of government and public services continues without interruption and to prevent a vacuum of authority. Ni Made requested that the public not be alarmed or engage in excessive speculation regarding the issuance of the acting governor appointment letter for the period of 24 June to 1 July 2026. She stressed that there is no extraordinary situation or leadership crisis behind the policy. To address public speculation about succession, Ni Made revealed that the reason for the Governor’s temporary absence is a medical appointment. “The Governor’s main agenda is simply to undergo a medical check-up,” she clarified.
