Sultan Appoints Paku Alam X as Acting Governor of Yogyakarta
Residents of Yogyakarta have been stirred by reports stating that the Governor of DIY, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, has appointed the Vice Governor, KGPAA Paku Alam X, as the Acting Governor (Plh) of DIY. Regarding this matter, the Regional Secretary (Sekda) of DIY, Ni Made Dwi Panti Indrayanti, has confirmed the appointment.
She explained that the appointment of an Acting Governor is a very natural and normative administrative procedure in government governance. This temporary change, she clarified, is a standard mechanism used when the head of an institution is unable to perform their duties for certain reasons.
“It is very common and normal if the head of an institution is unable to carry out duties for any reason. Whether it is due to illness, official visits, or leave, daily duties will be covered by their deputy. This is a very procedural and normal process within the government bureaucracy,” said Ni Made on Thursday (25/06).
The appointment of an Acting Governor, according to Ni Made, is intended to ensure there is no vacuum of authority in the administration of local government while the Governor is away. Consequently, the administration of government, public services, and routine decision-making will continue without hindrance.
She requested that the public should not be overly concerned or speculative regarding the issuance of the appointment letter for the period from 24 June to 1 July 2026. She assured that there is no extraordinary circumstance or leadership crisis behind this policy.
“This decision is neither a new policy nor a specific political move, but rather the implementation of government governance as regulated by laws and regulations. Every regional head who is temporarily unavailable is obliged to appoint an Acting Governor so that government functions continue and no vacuum of authority occurs,” she emphasised.
To clarify speculation regarding leadership succession, Ni Made revealed that the reason the Governor of DIY, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, is temporarily unavailable is due to medical requirements.
“So, the Governor’s main agenda at this time is simply for a medical check-up,” explained Ni Made.
