Mamuju - The Sulawesi Barat Provincial Health, Population Control, and Family Planning Office (Dinkes P2KB) is urging local residents to eliminate the stigma surrounding epilepsy as a contagious disease or one linked to mystical causes. “Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that can be managed with appropriate treatment. Sufferers can still lead productive lives if they receive support,” said the Head of Dinkes P2KB for Sulawesi Barat Province, Dr Nursyamsi Rahim, in Mamuju on Friday. Nursyamsi noted that many misconceptions persist in society regarding epilepsy, which actually impede access to treatment and the social lives of those affected. Epilepsy, according to Nursyamsi, can affect anyone, from children to the elderly. “Support from families, healthcare workers, and the community is essential, not only medically but also emotionally,” she said. In general, Nursyamsi explained, epilepsy is characterised by seizures that may involve stiffening of the body, uncontrolled movements, or loss of consciousness. “In some cases, sufferers may also experience blank stares, momentary confusion, or repetitive movements such as chewing,” she added. In this regard, Nursyamsi reminded the public of the importance of proper initial handling when someone experiences a seizure. The community is advised to remain calm, keep dangerous objects away, protect the head with a soft cushion, and position the sufferer’s body on their side to keep the airway clear. “It is important to remember not to restrain the seizure movements or insert anything into the sufferer’s mouth. Accompany them until they regain consciousness and ensure their condition is safe,” Nursyamsi clarified. On the occasion of Purple Day 2026 or World Epilepsy Day, the Sulawesi Barat Provincial Government is championing a spirit of care for those with epilepsy. This year’s commemoration carries the theme ‘Turning Stories into Action’, which emphasises the importance of concrete steps rather than just sharing stories. The Sulawesi Barat Provincial Dinkes P2KB is also promoting strengthened education, healthcare services, community support, and family counselling to enhance the quality of life for epilepsy sufferers.
