When planning international travel, document preparation is the most crucial step. In addition to a passport as an official identity document, a visa is the primary key that determines whether an individual is permitted to cross a country’s borders.
What is a Visa?
A visa is an official permit issued by a destination country through an embassy, consulate, or immigration authority. This document serves as evidence that the applicant has met the legal and administrative requirements to enter, transit, or temporarily reside in that country.
Visa formats vary according to the issuing country’s policies:
Stamps or Stickers: Affixed directly onto a passport page.
e-Visa (Electronic): A digital document in PDF format sent via email.
Differences Between a Passport and a Visa
Many novice travellers still confuse these two documents:
Issuer: A passport is issued by the home country’s government (e.g., Indonesian Immigration), whereas a visa is issued by the government or embassy of the destination country.
Function: A passport serves as official proof of citizenship abroad, while a visa serves as permission to enter and stay in a country.
Nature: A passport is mandatory for all international travel, whereas a visa depends on the destination country’s policies (some countries offer visa-free entry).
Visa applications must be aligned with the purpose of the visit to avoid violating immigration laws:
Tourist Visa: Intended for visitors seeking holidays or recreation.
Business Visa: Used for attending conferences, business meetings, or negotiations. (Note: This type does not permit the holder to work as a local employee).
Work Visa: Required for anyone officially working and receiving income from an institution in the destination country.
Student/Training Visa: Specifically for those undertaking formal education or exchange programmes.
Transit Visa: Required if one must change planes and stop in an area outside the airport of a certain country before reaching the final destination.
Visa on Arrival (VoA): An entry permit applied for and paid for directly upon arrival at the airport or border of the destination country.
Currently, news regarding the ease of applying for Dutch visas has become a point of interest for the people of Sulawesi. Starting from September 2026, it is reported that Dutch visa applications can be processed in Makassar, meaning residents from various provinces in Sulawesi will no longer need to travel to Jakarta solely to undergo the application process.
