Public concern over noisy or ‘brong’ exhaust sounds on roads and near hospital areas in Sukoharjo Regency has been addressed by the local police through raids and enforcement operations.

At least 73 violations involving illegal exhausts linked to illegal street racing were penalised throughout July and August.

“This cannot be allowed to continue; it must be firmly controlled and penalised because it has disturbed the public,” said Sukoharjo Police Traffic Unit Chief AKP Doohan Octa Prasetyo during a press conference on the results of the exhaust crackdown at the local police headquarters on Wednesday (19/8).

According to him, accompanied by several Sukoharjo Traffic Unit officers, enforcement was generally carried out at night until the early hours, especially from around 11.00 pm onwards, through patrols and responses to public reports.

Before taking enforcement action, police first carried out pre-emptive measures, namely socialisation and education in schools and communities, about compliance with traffic order on the roads.

“Enforcement is in accordance with Law Number 22 of 2009 on Road Traffic and Transportation, Article 285 paragraph (2), Article 106 paragraph (3), and Article 48 paragraph (2), which regulate the technical requirements and roadworthiness of motor vehicles,” Doohan added.

Provisions on vehicle completeness and condition, such as rear-view mirrors, horns, headlamps, as well as exhaust systems and technical equipment, were the main focus of the operation.

In addition to paying administrative fines, offenders are also required to restore their exhausts to match their vehicle specifications.

“We want offenders to be deterred and not repeat the installation of noisy exhausts when riding on the roads,” Doohan concluded.
