Sukhoi Fighter Jet Overruns Runway in Makassar, Here's the Indonesian Air Force's Explanation
A Sukhoi fighter jet belonging to the Indonesian Air Force experienced an incident, overrunning the runway at Sultan Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Monday (24/8/2026). The incident occurred on the western runway (runway 13) at Sultan Hasanuddin Airport at around 11.00 WITA.
The Indonesian Air Force stated that the incident occurred during a test flight sequence for the Sukhoi Su-30 MK2 fighter jet after completing an overhaul or heavy maintenance. During the test flight sequence, the aircraft was carrying out an inspection stage in the form of a simulated take-off on the runway.
During the simulated take-off, when braking was applied, a technical problem occurred with the braking system, which did not function optimally, causing the aircraft to travel approximately 30 metres beyond the end of the runway. The aircraft and all crew were in a safe condition. The aircraft was subsequently towed to the maintenance hangar for inspection and preparation for the next test flight.
