Sukabumi Residents Go Viral After Two Years Displaced Following Floods and Landslides
A video circulating on social media shows several residents of Sukabumi, West Java, claiming they remain displaced after their homes were hit by floods and landslides in 2024.
Nearly two years after the disaster, they say there is still no certainty over the promised Rp10 million in rental assistance for temporary housing. West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, also known as Demul or KDM, who recently visited areas affected by the NTT earthquake, responded via a social media post.
“To the Governor of West Java, Mr Dedi Mulyadi, please pay attention to us as well, sir, here as residents of Kampung Cikanti, Cisarua and others in Cidadap Village, Simpenan District, Sukabumi. We have been displaced for almost two years, with no certainty regarding the Rp10 million rental assistance and housing,” said a woman in the video.
Through his Instagram account, Demul explained that the disaster affecting the Sukabumi residents occurred before he became Governor of West Java.
“The disaster occurred in December 2024, before I took office,” said Dedi Mulyadi on his Instagram account.
Dedi said he has already distributed aid to Sukabumi residents affected by the 2024 floods and landslides.
According to Dedi, his administration has provided assistance including Rp10 million each for living costs to 28 households affected by the disaster in Simpenan District, totalling Rp280 million.
He also cited the construction of 20 Sundanese-architecture houses in Palabuhanratu District in 2025, valued at Rp120 million per unit including land, paving block installation and other works, with a total value of around Rp2.4 billion.
This was followed by the construction of 20 stilt houses in Palabuhanratu District in 2026, valued at Rp126 million per unit with a total budget of around Rp2.5 billion, and assistance for the construction of 20 houses in Nyalindung District with a total budget of around Rp800 million.
“So the money already disbursed to Sukabumi Regency for those affected by the disaster amounts to Rp6,093,000,000,” said Dedi.
Regarding the viral post by Sukabumi residents, Dedi said the Sukabumi Regency Government had submitted a request for assistance to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). However, there has been no realisation from that agency.
Dedi therefore said he would handle the matter and asked the Sukabumi Regency Government to provide land.
“But because there may have been no realisation to this day, we will immediately handle it on the condition that the Regency Government prepares the land,” said the Gerindra politician.
Dedi said the total number of affected households is 120. He stressed that he would immediately prepare funds to help the affected residents.
“The total need is not 46, but 120 households. If the assistance is Rp40,000,000 per household for 120 households, then the Provincial Government needs to prepare funds of Rp4,800,000,000,” he said.
Dedi said the delay occurred because the request letter was submitted to the BNPB rather than to the West Java Provincial Government.
“All the delays occurred because the letter sent was not addressed to the governor, but to the BNPB, and the incident occurred before I took office as governor,” he said.
“May we all be spared from disasters, and the West Java Provincial Government will resolve all problems occurring in society together with the regents and mayors,” he added.
