This nation is undergoing a hard exam. The latest proof is that the leaders have been challenging each other. The President has challenged the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) to hold a special session. This challenge was answered by the MPR Speaker and the Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) by asking President Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) to resign from the presidency. The President answered "what if I don't want to resign".
I suggest that students not be busy with the plaything given by Gur Dur, i.e. chasing Soeharto and his cronies. Don't think that if Soeharto is tried, everything will be all right, whereas the actual source of the disease has shifted towards Gus Dur, Amien and Akbar. Their disputes have given rise to more serious damage to this country rather than did Soeharto, which will be resolved in the course of time.
Dear students, please think of saving the nation and state in order not to be made tools of the political elite. The student leaders of all universities and higher learning institutes must not be hostile to each other. Hold a meeting to elect a president of student representatives. You could, for example, offer the result to MPR and DPR. The students' choice would certainly be backed by the people provided it was objective and rational. My suggestion is don't choose someone from a political party, people who like to discredit one another. Choose one from academic circles or any other source who is not clumsy as a leader.
