Suggestion for Liga Indonesia
Suggestion for Liga Indonesia
From Suara Karya
The Liga Indonesia tournament was a bold step for the Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI) and should be highly appreciated by soccer fans throughout Indonesia. In addition to Liga Indonesia, PSSI has also prepared a Future Team (Primavera), which is currently being trained in Italy. Our hope is that this program will be successful enough for Indonesia to then take part in the World Cup in 2002 and 2006.
However, something can still be done to improve the performance of Liga Indonesia competition. The tournament involves too many teams. With 34 teams participating in the competition, the meeting timetable is crammed with matches and the tournament will last very long. If a player happens to also work, he will have to leave his job for six months.
In Europe, similar tournaments involve only 15 to 22 teams. Also, grouping the participants into two groups (east and west) will not likely result in a real champion. The top seeded team in the west group, for instance, will not automatically be able to beat the lowest seeded team in the east group. Anyway, sports are not mathematics.
