Sugarcane factory workers go on strike

GORONTALO CITY, Gorontalo: Around 800 workers of PT Radjawali
Gorontalo sugarcane factory have been on strike for two days, to
demand an increase in their monthly salary to Rp 800,000 (US$97).

A representative of the workers Taufik Nurdin said on Saturday
that the strike was held to demand what the board of directors
had promised.

Currently, each worker at the factory receives a monthly
salary of only Rp 430,000.

"We will continue the strike until the directors fulfill our
demand. Our current salary is not enough to feed our families,"
he complained.

Factory representative Heru Mulyono said the directors were
currently discussing the demand in Jakarta. He requested the
workers to be patient while waiting for the decision. -- Antara
