Sugar smugglers arrested in Buton

KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: Buton Police in Southeast Sulawesi recently confiscated two tons of raw sugar shipped from India, and arrested four people.

L.M, one of the four people arrested, was the owner of the raw sugar.

Chief of Buton Police Adj. Sr. Comr. Ali Pranaka said on Wednesday that the raw sugar was confiscated after police received a tipoff that a ship in Bau-Bau port was carrying smuggled sugar.

The police raided the ship and after investigation it was discovered later that the sugar had been carried from India to Bau-Bau without proper documentation.

The police then swiftly arrested the owner of the sugar and three other people who were accused of helping him smuggle the sugar. "The dossier has been handed over to the prosecutor's office," he said. -- JP
