Sudin KPKP confirms Thousand Islands Eid al-Adha sacrificial meat safe for consumption
Jakarta - The Thousand Islands Sub-District KPKP Office has confirmed that sacrificial meat for Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijriah distributed to residents is safe for consumption following animal health and organ suitability checks at various slaughter sites.
“A total of 83 cows, 43 goats, and 48 sheep were inspected,” said Nurliati, head of the Thousand Islands Sub-District KPKP Office, in Jakarta on Thursday.
She confirmed that, based on inspections of hundreds of sacrificial animals, officials found 19 kilograms of organs unfit for consumption, which were immediately destroyed to prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases.
The unfit organs comprised 6 kilograms of liver, 10 kilograms of lungs, and three animal heads. Overall, the inspections were largely satisfactory, though some organs were found to contain parasites.
She explained that organs deemed unfit were destroyed on-site by burial or disinfectant treatment.
The animal inspections involved 57 joint officers from the Thousand Islands Sub-District KPKP, Jakarta’s KPKP Department, and the Indonesian Veterinary Association (PDHI).
Each island deployed six to eight inspection officers.
“Some areas are still conducting slaughters today, albeit in small numbers, and we are monitoring them,” she said.
“This activity is conducted to ensure the distributed meat is safe for consumption, and the inspections are part of the annual standardised service protocol,” she said.
“We want to ensure the sacrificial meat distributed to residents is truly safe and fit for consumption,” she added.
Meanwhile, Jakarta PDHI veterinarian Wahab Syukron explained that the presence of fasciola hepatica (liver fluke) in sacrificial organs can be managed with proper cooking.
He stated the animals’ physical condition was generally good, with only liver flukes detected in the liver.
“These organs can still be consumed if cooked at a minimum temperature of 70 degrees Celsius for a specific duration,” he said.
