Sudaryono Suspends MBG Kitchen in Semarang Following Alleged Mass Poisoning
The Head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), Sudaryono, personally visited victims of the alleged Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) poisoning in Semarang on Saturday (1/8/2026). The visit aimed to monitor the condition of the victims and oversee the medical treatment provided by hospitals.
Sudaryono visited several hospitals treating the victims, including RS Permata Medika, RS Bhakti Tamtama, and RS Pantiwilasa Citarum. This visit serves as a rapid government response following an incident involving hundreds of students and teachers at SMK Negeri 6 Semarang.
As previously reported, the Semarang City Health Office reported that 707 individuals—comprising 693 students and 14 teachers—allegedly suffered poisoning after consuming the Free Nutritious Meals distributed at school on Friday (31/7/2026). Most victims experienced symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. While some required hospitalisation, others received medical treatment based on their specific conditions.
In response to the incident, Sudaryono emphasised that an investigation team is currently working to uncover the cause of the incident. The investigation is being conducted to identify the source of the problem and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
“The investigation team is still working to delve into this case. We want to ensure the cause is identified based on comprehensive examination results,” said Sudaryono.
He asserted that the National Nutrition Agency will not tolerate any negligence in the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meal Programme. If the investigation finds any violations or negligence by the Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG), the BGN will take decisive action.
“If negligence is proven, we will suspend the relevant SPPG while awaiting the results of the evaluation and further action in accordance with applicable regulations,” he stated.
At present, the exact cause of the suspected poisoning is awaiting the results of the investigation and laboratory testing of food samples. The government and relevant agencies continue to manage the victims while investigating the cause to ensure the Free Nutritious Meal Programme continues with a primary focus on food safety.
