Sudan Rejects New US Sanctions, Calling Them Unilateral and Illegal

Khartoum (ANTARA) - Sudan has rejected the new US sanctions imposed on the country, describing the measures as unilateral and illegal actions based on false allegations.

On Friday (17 July), the United States announced the implementation of a second round of sanctions, after determining that the Sudanese army had used chemical weapons and that the country had failed to meet the conditions required for the sanctions to be lifted.

In a statement on Sunday (19 July), Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the government had previously denied the allegations, and stressed that the country does not produce, possess, or use chemical weapons.

Sudan accused the United States not only of failing to provide credible evidence, but also of disregarding the mechanisms and technical procedures set out under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) before imposing the sanctions.

“This shows that the sanctions are purely driven by political motives and do not reflect genuine concerns regarding the prevention of the use of chemical weapons,” the ministry said.

The sanctions, which are scheduled to take effect on 20 July, include the US refusal to grant loans, financial assistance, and technical support to Sudan through international financial institutions, with the exception of humanitarian aid.

The measures also prohibit the export of most US goods and technology to Sudan, whilst tightening controls on exports that could be used for sensitive or military purposes.
