Suci Bungaran the only Indonesian survivor
JAKARTA (JP): Girl's tennis player Suci Bungaran was the only Indonesian to survive the second round of the 2001 Gas Negara International Junior Championships on Wednesday.
Suci had no difficulty overcoming compatriot and eighth seeded Maya Rosa 6-3, 6-2, to cruise into the quarterfinals on Thursday. She will face top seeded Maretha Van Niekerk of South Africa, who had an easy time with South Korean qualifier Kim Su-jin, winning 6-4, 6-2.
Indonesian Septi Nindya Yutami lost to fifth seeded Amani Khalifa of Egypt 6-2, 6-1. Khalifa will now face South Korean qualifier Chun Ji-ni, who upset Nontinee Tangpong of Thailand 6- 2, 7-5.
Second seeded Yomna Farid of Egypt ousted Indonesian Novianti Warsono 6-2, 6-3, and will meet seventh seeded Susanne Aigner of Austria on Thursday. Aigner had to struggle to defeat Indonesian Diana Julianto 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 7-6 (7-6).
Another quarterfinal match will pit Amber Liu of the United States against Kim So-jung of South Korea. Liu had an easy 6-3, 6-0, win over Filipino Czarima Mae Arevalo, while Kim topped third seeded Pichaya Laosirichon 6-3, 6-1.
On the boy's side, Indonesians Al Imron and Marlo Santoso were no match for their opponents at the Kemayoran Tennis Center.
Imron was defeated by eighth seeded Markus Egger 6-2, 6-1, while Marlo put up a good fight before succumbing to fourth seeded Vinod Kumar Sewa of India 3-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Egger will now meet top seeded Sunil Kumar Sipaeya of India, who defeated Izak Van Der Merwe of South Africa 2-6, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, while Sewa will play seventh seeded Dias Doskarayev of Kazakhstan, who beat Belgian qualifier Steve Darcis 7-5, 6-1, on Wednesday.
Second seeded Jonathan Chu of the United States overwhelmed Kim Jun-young of South Korea 6-3, 6-2. Chu will play sixth seeded Gunter Austerhuber of Austria, who topped Ivan Kokurin of Uzbekistan 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. In another quarterfinal match, third seeded Robert Blair of South Africa will meet Clinton Letcher of Australia. (ivy)
