JAKARTA — The government has officially started construction of subsidised rumah susun (rusun) in the Meikarta area, Bekasi Regency, West Java, as part of the acceleration of the Three Million Homes Programme announced by President Prabowo Subianto.

The project is touted as a pilot collaboration between the government, the private sector, and financing institutions to provide affordable housing for the public.

Public Works and Public Housing Minister Maruarar Sirait, also known as Ara, expressed appreciation to Lippo Group and Danantara Indonesia for preparing the project in about two months up to the groundbreaking.

“We commend the hard work of the Lippo Group and Danantara teams, as well as the PKP team, who in around two months have prepared this project to begin today. We also thank the founder of Lippo Group, Mr Mochtar Riady, for his support and contribution to the construction of housing for the people,” Ara said on Sunday (8 March 2026).

“I personally visited the KPK to ensure everything is clear and clean, thereby providing legal certainty for the public who will buy, for banks, and for developers,” he added.

According to Ara, vertical housing development is a solution to save land while increasing the number of units.

From land of around 30 hectares in Meikarta, the project is projected to yield about 141,000 housing units.

“If built as landed houses, it would require around 1,200 hectares of land. With vertical construction, land use is much more efficient,” he said.

In addition to Bekasi, the government is also preparing similar projects in Depok. The government has identified land belonging to the Ministry of Communications and Digital (Kominfo) of about 45 hectares with potential to build up to around 170,000 housing units.

Hashim Djojohadikusumo, head of the Housing Task Force, said the subsidised rusun project in Meikarta is a flagship project in the Three Million Homes Programme because it involves various parties and has broad economic impact.

“The housing industry has a multiplier effect on the economy. Its impact could be between 1.5 and 5 times the growth of the economy because there are around 185 sectors related to property, construction, and housing,” he said.

“From the financing side, Danantara will provide full support for this project as we see it as very good and with a large impact. In addition, BUMN Karya can also collaborate with private contractors in development,” he added.

He added that the initial phase is planned on land of around 12.8 hectares with plans for 18 rusun towers, each around 32 storeys tall. The investment value of the project is estimated at Rp 14 trillion to Rp 16 trillion.

The government hopes this project can become a model of collaboration among the government, state-owned enterprises, and the private sector in accelerating the provision of decent housing for the public while also boosting national economic growth.
